![]() ![]() Physical barriers can pose particular risks to river and sea lamprey that migrate up rivers to spawn. Good water and substrate quality (particularly in spawning areas) is important for all lamprey species, and all species are threatened throughout their range by habitat degradation. River and sea lamprey will then begin their migration to the sea from late autumn onwards. Ammocoetes feed on diatoms and other algae, and bacteria.Īmmocoetes may stay in soft substrate for up to five years (up to eight years for sea lamprey) before they transform into pre-adults. They settle in nursery habitats – areas with fine, soft substrate in well-oxygenated, slow-flowing water. Once hatched, the lamprey larvae – known as ammocoetes – drift downstream with the current. Sea lamprey spawn in much smaller numbers. On reaching their spawning ground, lamprey construct a ‘nest’ in which to lay their eggs.īrook and river lamprey spawn in a ‘ball’, which may comprise up to 50 individuals. They spawn from May to July in areas of pebble and cobble substrate. The sea lamprey is the largest of the three British lamprey species, reaching approximately 1m in length.Īfter spending 18 to 24 months feeding at sea, adult sea lamprey migrate up rivers in the spring and early summer. The dwarf river lamprey is found in Loch Lomond and is so called as it reaches only 25cm in length. Purely freshwater-resident populations of river lamprey are rare in Europe, but one exists in Scotland. Spawning takes place from April to May on pebble/gravel substrates. River lamprey migrate upstream at night and the adults rest in cover during the day. ![]() Autumn migrants are sexually undeveloped, while spring migrants enter from the sea in spawning condition. They migrate from their coastal feeding grounds into freshwater, to get ready to spawn, during the autumn and spring. River lamprey are larger than brook lamprey, reaching 30 to 50cm in length. All of these adults will die after spawning. On reaching suitable gravel areas, these fish hide until spawning takes place from April to June. For example, larvae may drift downstream to sandy/silt nursery areas.Īctive upstream migrations of pre-adults and adults occur through the winter. Unlike other British lamprey species, they don’t feed as adults.ĭespite being wholly freshwater-resident, brook lamprey do undergo limited spawning migrations – though some such movements may be passive. Lamprey are found in temperate waters in both the northern and southern hemispheres.īrook lamprey are an entirely freshwater species and the smallest of the British lamprey, reaching 15 to 19cm in length. ![]() Most, but not all, lamprey species are parasitic on other fish. A round, sucker-like disc surrounds the mouth which, in adults, carries rasping teeth. Lamprey skeletons are formed of strong, flexible cartilage rather than bone. Lamprey belong to an ancient order of vertebrates, the Agnatha or ‘jawless fish’. ![]()

It is the fourth main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, following 2001's Grand Theft Auto III, and the sixth instalment overall. Students learn about a case where speciation occurred between two populations of finches.Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is a 2002 action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. An immigrant species bred with the local birds on the island which created a new lineage of birds, which were different from the original population. Consequently, the original group would not breed with these new group, because they had a larger size and a different song. Students explore the case to learn about geographic and behavioral isolation which can lead to speciation. The strange subpopulation, which were playfully named “Big Birds” would sing songs that the other birds didn’t recognize. Later, the new group moved to a different area of the island and would only mate with closely related members. Students read about the study and examine graphs and charts that describe the data that was gathered by the Grants. If possible, students work together and discuss the case. Students must answer a final synthesis question about how the population models types of speciation. Students will be somewhat familiar with finch studies if they have already watched the HHMI video on speciation and finches. I spend a lot of time with students studying real populations and data to reinforce the concept that evolution is happening and not just something that happened in the past. Students have already studied stickleback fish and the rock pocket mouse. This worksheet focuses more on speciation and reproductive isolation. I designed this worksheet for remote learning, so answer fields are shaded to help me grade them and to indicate where students should answer questions or review data. Alternatively, you could remove the shaded boxes for print material. ![]() This work was originally posted in another group, though I did modify it and change formatting for remote lessons. I do not know who the original creator was. This activity provides an introduction to natural selection and the role of genetic variation by asking students to analyze illustrations of rock pocket mouse populations (dark/light fur) on different color substrates in the Sonoran Desert (light/dark) over time. Based on this evidence, and what they learn about variation and natural selection in the accompanying short film, students use this evidence to explain the change in the rock pocket mouse populations on the lava flow (dark substrate) over time. ![]() This is one of several classroom activities, focusing on related topics and varying in complexity, built around the short film. ![]() This ten minute film shows adaptive changes in rock pocket mouse populations, demonstrating the process of natural selection and can be accessed at. The film is also available as an interactive video with embedded questions, which test students’ understanding as they watch the film. The series also has two animations which will help to reinforce the concept. This resource is explicitly designed to build towards this performance expectation.Ĭomments about Including the Performance ExpectationĪt the beginning of the lesson, students place four illustrations showing different numbers of light and dark colored rock pocket mice at two locations (light/dark substrate) in sequence from oldest to most recent. Watching the short film, students learn about the changes of rock pocket mouse populations, and that the environment contributes towards determining whether or not randomly arising mutations in fur color are advantageous, neutral, or deleterious. As students return to the four illustrations after watching the video, they analyze the illustrations by counting and graphing the color distribution of rock pocket mice at the two locations (light/dark). Based on this evidence, students arrange the four illustrations in a sequence from oldest to most recent, and make an argument for how natural selection leads to a change in fur color in the populations of rock pocket mice over time. Before starting the activity, it is helpful if the teacher familiarizes students with the rock pocket mouse and its habitat. ![]() To engage student interest in the lesson, teachers should raise the question of how there came to be two different populations of pocket mice (light/dark). ![]() |
